A targeted anesthetic injection of the auriculotemporal nerve (ATN) — the primary sensory nerve of the TMJ — used to diagnose the true source of facial pain and break stubborn TMJ pain cycles.
After clinical mapping of the pain, a small, precisely placed injection of local anesthetic (sometimes with an anti-inflammatory) is delivered near the ATN just in front of the ear; relief is often immediate and response confirms whether the joint is the pain generator.
